Google Voice is pretty spiffy and is - so far at least - a free service currently only available by invitation (which, from my personal experience only, is taking several weeks to process). As you may already know, it's US-based only at this time, although some people who were already signed up for Grand Central (GV's predecessor basically) were able to maintain their service, Google is evidently saying they do have plans to roll it out in CA as well, just not saying when. Apparently it's also still unavailable in Alaska and Hawaii. See this page for more Q&A about that aspect of it.
It basically gives you a phone number that you can direct to ring on one or any combination of three phone numbers (more? can't recall), and you can adjust that combination as often/any time you want. You can also configure a call from your home/work/cell phone to display your GV number on caller ID. It also saves you money on international calling although I haven't tried that yet.
Part of what's fun is picking your phone number which does not have to be anywhere near your home area. You can even type in words and it will show you available numbers that include that series of characters.
More here on Google Voice's "About" page.

I have Wave, but don't have invites to share yet... and Voice is no good to me, cause it's USA only... (grumble)
But when i get Wave invites, I'll repost here
